# Why did engineering change the member sizes on my shed?

**Member sizes on a quote are preliminary. When ShedMate engineering checks the job for its site, sizes can change, up or down.** If they do, we email you the items that changed and ask you to confirm before we finish the engineering documents. Check the price against the changes, then confirm. The engineer works on the version of the shed you submitted, so later edits won't appear in the documents.

**When you get an engineering adjustments email**

1. Read the list of items changed
2. Check the shed's price with the new sizes
3. Tell your customer if the price or the build changes
4. Reply to confirm, so we can finish the engineering documents

![Four steps from left to right: the quote with preliminary sizes, the engineering request on the saved version, engineering checks the job for its site and emails any adjustments, and you confirm before the final engineering documents are prepared](https://help.shedmate.com.au/hubfs/Shedmate%20Guides/ENG04__1-quote-to-engineering.png)

### Why sizes change at engineering

At quote stage, ShedMate matches your shed to a computation in its engineering library. That gives you member sizes to quote from. When you request engineering, our engineer checks the whole job for its site: the wind on that site, the shed as drawn, and how its frames, mullions and openings work together.

That check can change the design in either direction:

- **Smaller sizes.** A frame or mullion can come down a size, for example from C300 to C250, when the site allows it. That can lower the price.
- **Larger sizes or extra members.** A member can go up a size, or a mullion can be added beside an opening, when the design needs it.
- **Footings and bridging.** Footing sizes and bridging can change with the members.

Each change is checked against the site, so the engineered sizes are the ones to build and order from.

### The engineering adjustments email

When the engineer changes anything, you get an email naming the job and saying it "has been updated with some engineering adjustments". It lists the **Items changed**, for example "Decrease Column from C:300-30 to C:250-24". It ends by asking you to confirm you're happy, so the final engineering documents can go ahead.

Nothing is final until you confirm. If a change affects what you've told your customer, talk to them first, then reply.

### Engineering uses the version you submitted

The engineer works on the version of the shed saved when you requested the engineering. If you change the shed after that, for example by moving a mullion, the engineering documents won't show the change. Plans you make later from the newer version won't match them.

**Finish the design before you request engineering.** Make sure the saved shed is the one your customer wants, including openings, mullions and the site. If you need to change it after the request, ask us first instead of editing the shed.

### Check the site details

The site sets the wind loads, so it sets the sizes. If the site details are set for harsher conditions than the site really has, the members come out bigger than they need to be. Check the site before you request engineering, and save the site plan.

### Quoting before engineering

Tell your customer that member sizes and the price are subject to engineering confirmation. If the engineering status shows a computation name in **blue**, the shed is stronger than the computation needs. In **red**, it's weaker. See [What does my engineering status mean, and what do I do?](https://help.shedmate.com.au/knowledge/what-does-my-engineering-status-mean?hsLang=en)

If the members in the designer change while you're still editing the shed, check **Auto Apply Engineering**. See [Why don't the structural members change when I resize my shed?](https://help.shedmate.com.au/knowledge/why-dont-the-structural-members-change-when-i-resize-my-shed?hsLang=en)
