# How do I price an item per roll, per metre or per kg?

Short answer: **give the item the unit you sell it by, enter the price for one of that unit, and check that its calculation counts the same unit.** That means metres for a per-metre item, kilograms for a per-kg item and whole rolls for a per-roll item.

**Change how an item is priced**

1. Work out the price for one unit
2. In **Pricing Database**, set the item's **Unit** and **Price**
3. In **Pricing Calculations**, check what the item's calculation counts
4. Test it on a test job, then save the database

### Work out the price for one unit

| You sell it | Unit | Price to enter | Example |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| By the metre | **m** | Your price per metre | $12.00 per metre |
| By the kilogram | **kg** | Your price per metre ÷ the member's mass per metre | $15.00 per metre ÷ 6.60 kg per metre = $2.2728 per kg |
| By the roll | **un** | Your price per metre × the length of one roll | $4.00 per metre × 22.25 m = $89.00 per roll |

The mass per metre is in your supplier's or the steel mill's product data. For example, SHS 75 x 75 x 3.0 is 6.60 kg per metre. The prices in the table are examples only, so use your own.

There's no roll unit in the list, so price a roll as **un**: one unit is one roll.

**Round a per-kg price up, not down.** $15.00 ÷ 6.60 is $2.27272…, so enter $2.2728, not $2.2727. Rounding down charges a little less than your per-metre price on every metre. The **Price** box takes more than two decimal places.

### Set the item's unit and price

| | Step |
| --- | --- |
| 1 | Open a test job and go to **Instant Quoting**, then **Pricing Database** |
| 2 | Type the item's name in **Find Item** and press Enter |
| 3 | Click the item's **Unit** (1). Pick the new unit from the list (2), or type it in **Search** |
| 4 | Click the item's **Price** and type the price for one unit |

![Pricing Database rows for SHS 75x75 items priced in kg. The Unit cell of SM\_SHS:75x75x3.0 is marked 1, and the unit list that opens below it, starting kg, t, lbs, oz, d, is marked 2. Prices are hidden in this example](https://help.shedmate.com.au/hubfs/Shedmate%20Guides/Q-06__01-unit-cell__marked.png)

For a new item, click **New Item**, then **Pick an unit** (1) and choose the unit from the list (2).

### Check what the calculation counts

| | Step |
| --- | --- |
| 1 | Click **Pricing Calculations** at the top. Type the item's name in **Find Item** and press Enter |
| 2 | Point at the item's name and click **Open** |
| 3 | Check **Unit** and **Unit Type** (1). The unit type follows the item's unit: **m** shows **length** and **kg** shows **mass** |
| 4 | Check what the rule adds up (2). **Sum of** with **Length** counts metres. **Sum of** with **Mass** counts kilograms. To change it, click the property and pick from the list |
| 5 | Click **Confirm** to keep a change, or **Cancel** to close without one |

![Calculation for a C-section priced per metre: Unit m and Unit Type length marked 1, and the rule Sum of Length marked 2, adding up 17 members to 55.82 m. Prices are hidden in this example](https://help.shedmate.com.au/hubfs/Shedmate%20Guides/Q-06__03-per-metre-calc__marked.png)

![Calculation for an SHS priced per kg: Unit kg and Unit Type mass marked 1, and the rule Sum of Mass marked 2, for items where Profile name equals SHS:75x75x3.0. Prices are hidden in this example](https://help.shedmate.com.au/hubfs/Shedmate%20Guides/Q-06__04-per-kg-calc__marked.png)

The property list only offers properties that match the item's unit. A per-metre item offers length properties such as **Length**, and a per-kg item offers **Mass**. So change the item's unit first, then its calculation.

### Price insulation by the roll

You draw insulation on the shed in the Shed Designer, and ShedMate counts the whole rolls it needs. Each insulation product has its own roll length and overlap, so the count follows the product you pick.

| | Step |
| --- | --- |
| 1 | In the Shed Designer, click **Add Things**, then **Insulation** |
| 2 | Tick **Create Insulation Segments** (1). This works out the insulation by roll lengths, so it can be counted in whole rolls |
| 3 | Under **Roof**, **End Walls**, **Side Walls** or **Internal Walls**, pick the product (2) |
| 4 | Click the **i** beside the product (3) to see its **Width**, **Total Roll Length** and **Overlap** (4). Check they match the product you buy |
| 5 | Click **Save Shed** |

In **Instant Quoting**, an insulation item priced by the roll has the unit **un** (1). Its calculation uses a **Specify** rule, and its **Quantity** comes from a rolls count (2): the insulation drawn on the shed divided by the product's total roll length, rounded up to whole rolls. On a test shed 6 m wide and 9 m long, with Air Cell on the roof, it counted 3 rolls.

![Calculation for an insulation item priced per roll: Unit un and Unit Type un marked 1, and Quantity taken from the SM\_Insulation Rolls count, 3, marked 2, giving 3 units. Prices are hidden in this example](https://help.shedmate.com.au/hubfs/Shedmate%20Guides/Q-06__06-per-roll-calc__marked.png)

Enter the price of one roll as the item's **Price**: your price per metre × the product's total roll length, from the card in step 4. In ShedMate's starter database, the insulation items (their names start with SM\_Insulation) work this way.

**Roll length differs by product.** Price each product from its own roll length. If a product's roll length or overlap doesn't match what you buy, or a product you sell has no rolls count, email support@shedmate.com.au and we can help set it up.

### Test it, then save it

1. On a test job that uses the item, open **Pricing Calculations** and check **Unit** and **Quantity**: metres for **m**, kilograms for **kg** and whole rolls for **un**.
2. Multiply the quantity by your price yourself and compare it with the line.
3. **Save Quoting** saves this job's quoting work. To use the change on other jobs, choose **More**, then **Save Database**. Check which database and version you're saving before you continue.

**Change the unit and the calculation together.** If an item's unit and what its calculation counts don't match, the item won't price correctly on your quotes.

Existing quotes keep their database version until you load a newer one. See *My quote still shows my old prices. How do I update it?*
