# How do I change where holes are punched?

Short answer: **in a test copy of your preset, click Edit, find the rule and change the X on each punch row.** Use **+ Punch** to add a hole, **Type** and **Double** to choose the face and single or paired holes, then save and check it on a copy of a job.

**Change a hole position**

1. Open your test copy and click **Edit**
2. Click the group on the left and scroll to the rule for that member size
3. Change **X** on the punch row
4. Click **Save as new version**, then the reload arrow

New to presets? Start with How do I make a test copy of my bracket preset? and How do I read a bracket rule?

### Worked example: three holes at a column base

Say your column base bracket has holes 40, 110 and 180 mm up from the bottom of the column, and your preset has them at 50 and 120. Here's the change on the 200 column rule.

| | Step |
| --- | --- |
| 1 | Open the test copy, click **Edit**, then **Column Base** on the left. Scroll to the entry for your column size (here C:200, MC:200 and SC:200) |
| 2 | Change **X** (1) on each row: 50 to 40 and 120 to 110 |
| 3 | Leave **Type** (2), **Double** (3) and **Bolt** (4) as they are |
| 4 | Click **+ Punch** (5) to add the third hole |

![Column Base entry for C:200, MC:200 and SC:200 in Edit mode: the X fields at 50 and 120 marked 1, Type set to Top marked 2, Double ticked marked 3, the Bolt dropdowns marked 4 and + Punch marked 5](https://help.shedmate.com.au/hubfs/Shedmate%20Guides/BP-04__01-edit__marked.png)

The new row (1) starts at X 0, **Web**, single, with no bolt. The screen can jump back up the group when you add it, so scroll back down to the rule.

![The same rows after editing: X 40 and 110, both Top and Double, and a new row marked 1 showing X 0, Type Web, Double unticked and Bolt (none)](https://help.shedmate.com.au/hubfs/Shedmate%20Guides/BP-04__02-new-row__marked.png)

| | Step |
| --- | --- |
| 5 | Set the new row's **X** to 180 |
| 6 | Set **Type** to match the other rows (here **Top**), tick **Double** and pick the same **Bolt** |

To choose from a dropdown, click it and start typing the option, for example `Top` or the start of the bolt name, then press Enter.

![The finished rows: X 40, 110 and 180, all Top, Double ticked and the same M12x30 bolt, with the new 180 row marked 1](https://help.shedmate.com.au/hubfs/Shedmate%20Guides/BP-04__03-after__marked.png)

Click **Save as new version**, then the reload arrow, and check the three numbers are still there. Then convert a copy of a job with the test copy. On ours, the column now has three rows of flange holes (1) at about 40, 110 and 180 mm up from the bottom.

### Things to know

- **Holes follow the member.** X runs along the member's own length, up a column or along the slope of a rafter, for web, centre-line and flange holes alike.
- **Each column size has its own rule.** Change every entry your team uses, not just one.
- **Some groups punch the flange and the web at the same height.** You'll see two rows with the same X, one **Top** and one **Web**. Change both.
- **Delete a hole** with the bin icon at the end of its row.
- **A web hole can't be placed anywhere across the web.** It's either the Double pair or a single hole on the centre line. See How do I read a bracket rule?
- **X can be negative** when the hole sits before the point it's measured from.
- **Check the bolt list.** It's ShedMate's list, so pick the bolt you actually use.
- **Leave plate rules to us.** Some groups also have a **Plates** tab. If a plate needs changing, email us rather than editing it.
