# How do I change how a member is cut?

Short answer: **each member in a rule has a cut, in mm, and a reference point it's measured from.** The reference point says where the member stops; the cut takes that many mm off on top.

### Where to find it

Each frame block in a rule starts with a line that shows the cut and its reference point: the column (1) and, in two-member rules, the other member (2).

![Truss Over, Entry 1: the Primary column frame line showing cut 0 and ref Column Rafter Projection Outside marked 1, and the Secondary rafter frame line marked 2](https://help.shedmate.com.au/hubfs/Shedmate%20Guides/BP-05__01-cut-and-from__marked.png)

In **Edit**, the same line has a **cut** box and a **from** dropdown (1).

![A rule in Edit mode with the cut box and the from dropdown on the frame line marked 1](https://help.shedmate.com.au/hubfs/Shedmate%20Guides/BP-05__02-cut-field__marked.png)

### How the reference points work on a truss over or haunch column

| from | Where the column stops, before the cut |
| --- | --- |
| **Default Position** | At the top of the rafter, where the frames meet |
| **Column Rafter Projection Outside** | At the underside of the rafter, on the outside face of the column |
| **Column Rafter Projection Inside** | At the underside of the rafter, on the inside face of the column |

The cut then takes that many mm off the column. A cut of 20 with **Column Rafter Projection Outside** stops the column 20 mm below the rafter's underside at the outside face.

**One cut is used at both ends of the rafter and at every pitch.** On a sloping rafter the underside is higher at one face of the column than the other, and on a skillion the low end and the high end are mirror images. Check the column at both ends of the rafter, at the steepest pitch you build, before you rely on a value.

### Mullion tops

Each **Mullion Top** rule lists the mullion and the frame above it, usually the rafter, so you can have one rule per rafter size. The mullion's **cut** shortens the mullion at the top by that many mm. Mullions can run up beside the rafter, so to finish a mullion just under the rafter the cut may need to be close to the rafter's depth. Set it per rafter size and check it on a copy of a job.

### Holes move with the cut

Holes measured from the cut end of a member move with it. If you cut 20 mm off the top of a column, holes measured down from the top move down 20 mm too. Holes in the other member stay where they are. Check both after any cut change.

**Change a cut**

1. Open your test copy and click **Edit**
2. Find the rule and type the **cut** in mm on the member's frame line
3. Pick the **from** point if the group offers a choice
4. **Save as new version**, reload, and check both ends on a copy of a job
